Our aim is for students to enjoy maths and to be able to use their skills throughout life and not only as a means of passing public examinations.

Throughout the Maths Department, students are put into classes according to their ability. We are keen to stress that these are not fixed and through constant monitoring and assessment, students move both up and down sets.

KS3 students study the following topics as part of our scheme of work, at a level suitable for their current degree of understanding.

Y7

- Numbers and the number system
- Counting and comparing
- Calculating (all operations)
- Investigating Properties of shapes
- Visualising and construction
- Algebraic proficiency
- Exploring fraction, decimals and percentages
- Pattern identification
- Measuring and calculating space
- Investigating angles
- Estimation and approximation
- Mathematical movement
- Presentation of data
- Measuring data

Year 11 students spend the year investigating and mastering problem solving techniques, alongside reviewing all the topics covered during years 9 and 10, following a scheme of work tailored to the needs of the individual class.

In addition, the Maths Department also provides a range of extra curriculum activities, including Maths Club which runs from 3 – 4 on a Monday afternoon. A selected number of Year 8 and 10 students enter the UKMT Challenges run by Leeds University and Year 11 students have the opportunity to attend STEM projects and lectures involving higher level maths.
